Coconut Powder

Description:This is a tasty powder which goes well with rice.

Dessicated Coconut - 1 1/2 cups
Black gram dhal - 3 tblsp
Bengal gram dhal - 2 tblsp
Red Chillis - 15
Coriander seeds - 1 tsp
Tamarind powder - 2 tsp
Asafoetida(broken into pieces) 1 big piece
Gingelly oil - 1 tablespoons
Salt to taste.


1.Heat the oil in a frying pan and fry the asafoetida to a rich brown colour.
2.Add blackgram dhal,bengalgram dhal,redchillis and coriander seeds to the pan. Fry till the dhals are a rich brown colour.
3.Spread on a sheet of paper and allow to cool.
4.Dry roast the dessicated coconut to a light brown colour and cool.
5.Combine the dessicated coconut,salt and tamarind powder with the other ingredients and powder coarsely.
6.This can be stored in an air tight container for about 6 months and upto a year in the freezer.
