Idli Chilli Powder

Description:This is an excellent accompaniment to Idli and Dosas.
Preparation Time: 20 mins


Blackgram dal - 1 cup(250ml cup)
Bengalgram dal 1/4 cup
Red chillies 25 (long variety)
Til seeds 3/4 cup
Asafoetida(broken into pieces) 1 big piece
Mustard seeds - 1 tsp
Gingelly oil - 1 tblsp
Tamarind Powder - 1 tblsp
Salt to taste


1.Roast the til seeds in a frying pan till it is rich brown in colour and spread on a sheet of paper to cool.
2.Heat oil in a pan, add asafoetida first and when it is almost black,add the mustard seeds. When they crackle add the blackgram dhal,bengalgram dhal and red chilli and saute on a medium flame till the the dhals are a rich brown colour.
3.Spread on a sheet of paper to cool.
4.Combine the til seeds,dhals and red chillis,salt,tamarind powder and powder coarsely.

5.When eating with Idli or Dosa this powder should be mixed with a little sesame oil.
